The endless possibilities of PET packaging

Polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET, is a polyester material that resembles glass in appearance. But unlike glass, PET is lighter and unbreakable. This combination makes it an ideal material for producing containers for consumer goods such as food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

PET plastic packaging is also completely transparent and there are hardly any limits when it comes to shape. As a mono-material, recycling is much easier than more complex multilayer packaging alternatives, such as milk cartons, cardboard wrap cans with aluminium and multi-layer pouches.

Reasons why you should pick PET

LIGHTWEIGHT
PET is an optimal choice when choosing a packaging material as it has a minimal impact on the overall weight of the finished products. This makes handling easier and reduces energy consumption during transport, which also reduces CO2 emissions.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
PET requires less energy during the manufacturing process compared to other packaging materials, such as glass or paper. More energy-efficient production leads to an overall lower environmental impact, through reduced CO2 emissions.

SAFETY
PET provides a good barrier to external influences; this can extend the shelf life and freshness of packaged foods. It is resistant to many chemicals and is also durable enough to withstand shocks and drops.

VERSATILITY
PET enables customized packaging solutions for a variety of products. Its transparency makes it ideal for packaging where visibility of the contents is important. Additionally, PET can be formed into various shapes and colored as desired. This allows manufacturers to design packaging that meets brand requirements and aesthetic preferences.

RESEALABILITY
PET containers are characterized by their resealable nature, which helps preserve the freshness of products for longer and minimizes waste. In contrast, pouch packaging is often not resealable and can be easily opened, especially under pressure or in a fall.

RECYCLABILITY
PET is a mono-material and therefore 100% recyclable. This property allows it to be reused in a variety of products, such as in the production of rPET containers or polyester fibres for textiles. This not only reduces the amount of waste, but also conserves resources and reduces environmental impact.

Benefits of rPET

By using recycled PET, rPET has different benefits, like:

  • PET waste is fed back into the value chain in a circular manner. This reduces the need for virgin plastic and minimizes the amount of plastic waste in landfills and the environment.
  • Using recycled PET reduces the need to produce new plastics and therefore conserves the natural resources needed to produce new plastic.
  • Reprocessing recycled PET requires less energy compared to producing new PET, thus helping to reduce the environmental impact.
  • By using recycled material, any company can show its commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. This can improve a company’s image and positively influence customer perception.
  • Consumers are showing a growing appreciation for environmentally friendly packaging. Using rPET as a packaging material can help increase brand appeal to environmentally conscious consumers and increase their brand loyalty.
  • With increasing incentives and regulatory requirements to use recycled materials, companies using rPET for their packaging have the opportunity to not only comply with regulatory requirements but also reap potential benefits from government incentives.

rPET AND OBECK

We are combining our years of experience and accumulated know-how with our desire to innovate to increase our use of rPET to assist our customers to achieve their sustainability goals.

The materials we use in our rPET have to be carefully selected materials from certified suppliers who specialise in food-approved bottles and jars.

For more information on how you can benefit from using rPET for your packaging, please contact our team via the contact page. We can support and advise you on how best to make your bottles and jars more sustainable.

More about rPET

rPET, recycled polyethylene terephthalate, is a plastic made from consumer-recycled PET, the plastic waste we produce daily and dispose of properly.

Food-safe rPET, which is used for our packaging that comes into contact with food, comes exclusively from European deposit systems. These systems comply with strict laws and regulations to ensure that the original PET has only come into contact with food and not with harmful chemicals. It represents a perfect alternative for those who do not want to use virgin PET in their packaging.
